Civil rights in the Trump administration
I'm very concerned about many aspects of the Trump administration, but I particularly worry about the erosion of civil rights, both for citizens and for non-citizens. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has been acting in a particularly cruel and arbitrary way with great bigotry toward people of color. It presents a potential for civil rights violations for citizens, too, as witnessed by the news stories of citizens held for hours or days when they cannot easily prove their citizenship. Do you carry your passport and birth certificate with you? Do you want to live in a society where you need to?
So, I plan to watch the actions of the Justice Department, Homeland Security, and the ICE and vocally protest civil rights violations both to the agencies and to the congressional committes that provide oversight for them.

BBC taken over by the Thatcherites
It's been a few years since I regularly listened to the BBC news. It was a lot more fun listening on shortwave, but the BBC stopped broadcasting to North America. I now sporadically listen to the News Hour podcast using the BBC app on my iPod Touch and iPhone.
I was horrified by this morning's News Hour when I heard the presenter, Robin Lustig, advocate the "confidence fairy" policy for reviving economic growth. The Tories have really managed to destroy the BBC, just as the Republicans destroyed NPR in the United States. Very, very sad.
